Romanian Church

The church in Baia Mare, known as Curieri pentru Cristos (Couriers for Christ), was planted by Pastor Fritz Hoffman in 1993 following his 10 years of smuggling Bibles into Romania.  It began as a small house church meeting in the Hoffman family flat – later moving into rented buildings as the fellowship grew and as the ‘authorities’ moved them on.  In 1999 they moved into the present premises, which were eventually bought with funds from America and the UK including Northern Ireland in 2002.

Though it is interesting to see how the church building has been refurbished and the premises extended to accommodate the various Aid Projects and work of the Romanian Association … it is even more wonderful to know that from such small beginnings, has grown a church comprising some 100 people including children and teenagers.  Their boast in the Lord is that this growth has been in new converts and not in transfers from other churches.

It was a difficult time for the church following Pastor Fritz going to glory in July 2005, requiring his widow Ady to lead worship and Bible studies for all ages, but she was supported by her team of young helpers (Mona & Cristina) and the strength that only Christ can provide.  In 2007, the church recognised and appointed its first Elder and a team of supporting Deacons to help share those responsibilities.

The church excels in its children’s and youth ministries, providing opportunities for Bible study and worship through signing, dancing, music and craft.  Currently, up to 40 young people attend Sunday services and other mid-week activities and these numbers swell in the summer when the church runs Bible Clubs for younger children and, with the help of our supporters, older children attend Christian Summer Camp.
