Romanian Association?> Following our establishment as a UK charity in 2002, all of
our work was being co-ordinated through Curieri pentru Cristos church in Baia
Mare. During 2008 however, as charity
law began to require increasingly robust governance and accountability of
charitable activities, we encouraged and assisted the church in Baia Mare to
‘formalise’ its humanitarian aid work as the activity of a registered
Romanian Association. In January 2009 we entered into formal operational
arrangements with the new Association, including an agreed Memorandum of
Understanding, and an improved facility to send international monetary
transfers directly to their bank account in Romanian currency. This has helped us to reduce costs, the
time taken for funds to reach Romania, and provided more transparent
accountability. Our more formal relationship
now also allows us to share responsibility for overseeing the aid work with
the ‘Directors’ of the Association (the equivalent of our UK charity
trustees). These changes, in addition
to the establishment of a church leadership team, will therefore relieve Ady
of the pressures previously involved in having to carry ALL of these
responsibilities herself. It is hoped, in time, that as a Registered Association,
CfC-RO will be able to apply for local government funding, and that
supporters in Romania will qualify for tax relief on their donations, under
a scheme similar to Gift Aid here in the UK. |
